This sesshin is mandatory for those taking the precepts and receiving rheir lay robes/rakusu at the Precepts Ceremony on April 8th.  However, you do not have to take precepts to participate in this sesshin. “Sesshin” means to “gather the heart mind.”  It is a time for meditation, quiet contemplation and remembering what is truly essential to our lives.  Sesshins last from 2-7 days.  There will be several periods of sitting and walking meditation each day, work practice, dharma discussion, dokusan (private interviews with the sesshin leader) and formal meals (oryoki).  Participation in part of a longer sesshin by permission of the sesshin leader only.

Okesa Sewing - Fukudenkai @ Great Tree Zen Temple | Alexander | North Carolina | United States
Sewing Okesa (Buddha’s robe) is a Soto tradition.   We are currently sewing a 25-jo (row) kesa for Rev. Munnich to be worn for her Shinsanshiki (Mountain Seat Ceremony) in the Fall of 2019.  This is a long-term project and needs many hands to insure that the robe is completed in time for the ceremony.  If you are interested in leaning about the kesa sewing tradition or just like hand sewing join us on most Saturday afternoons anytime after lunch.   The Okesa sewing group will not meet during sesshin or when there are other events scheduled so please be sure to check the calendar. Also, if you are sewing a rakusu in preparation for taking the precepts (you don’t have to be taking them at Great Tree) and need some bring your rakusu and your questions to one of these session and we are happy…
