July Sesshin: Fireworks in Zen Practice
Jul 6 @ 5:30 pm – Jul 8 @ 12:00 pm
July Sesshin: Fireworks in Zen Practice @ Great Tree Zen Temple
Led by Rev. Teijo Munnich A sesshin (Japanese for “collecting the heart-mind”) is an intensive meditation retreat.  A sesshin typically lasts from two to seven days. During sesshin,  most of the time is devoted to meditation, and distraction is reduced.   Participants are asked keep silence , as much as possible, throughout the sesshin and to maintain a meditative focus throughout.  We follow a semi-monastic schedule during sesshin based on Soto traditions dating back to the time of Dogen Zenji, the founder of this school of Zen.   The schedule includes: Zazen (sitting meditation) Kinhin (walking meditation) Mindful work in the kitchen, building or grounds Participants are asked to share kitchen duties, cooking or clean-up Dokusan (private interview with the teacher).

Okesa Sewing – Fukudenkai
Jul 14 @ 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm
Okesa Sewing - Fukudenkai @ Great Tree Zen Temple | Alexander | North Carolina | United States
Sewing Okesa (Buddha’s robe) is a Soto tradition.   We are currently sewing a 25-jo (row) kesa for Rev. Munnich to be worn for her Shinsanshiki (Mountain Seat Ceremony) in the Fall of 2019.  This is a long-term project and needs many hands to insure that the robe is completed in time for the ceremony.  If you are interested in leaning about the kesa sewing tradition or just like hand sewing join us on most Saturday afternoons anytime after lunch.   The Okesa sewing group will not meet during sesshin or when there are other events scheduled so please be sure to check the calendar. Also, if you are sewing a rakusu in preparation for taking the precepts (you don’t have to be taking them at Great Tree) and need some bring your rakusu and your questions to one of these session and we are happy…
